Naturally Dyed
Yarn and Roving
for Knitting, Crocheting, Weaving & Spinning
Welcome to the  web site for RainShadow Yarn, specializing in naturally dyed yarn and roving for knitting, crocheting, spinning and weaving.  I work with the same dyes fiber artists have been using for centuries:  cochineal, indigo, madder, fustic, sustainably harvested logwood, and others.  My mordant is alum, a non-toxic chemical.  These fibers are safe for you and for the environment.

It is easy to forget that the wool in yarn is an   agricultural product.  If you take a sheep and add water, grass and minerals, you get the miracle of wool.  It is the primary ingredient in all of my yarn and roving, and the wool is harvested from sheep that  live within 100 miles of my home.  I use several different mills to spin the yarn, all of them in the United States.  The yarn is dyed by hand with natural dyes after it comes back from the mill.  The wool in the roving is hand-dyed with natural dyes before it is carded.
You may choose from several different blends of yarn.  Some of my yarn is made with merino-style wool, a very soft and elastic fiber suitable for anything from baby clothes to hats and scarves.  Other yarn is made with long-luster wool that is more durable and suitable for socks, sweaters, vests, afghans, etc.  The roving is all made with long, lustrous fibers suitable for spinning either woolen or worsted style.  The longer staple makes this roving very forgiving and easy for a beginner or an experienced spinner to use.

So wether you spin, knit, weave, crochet or have a passion for some other fiber art form, please enjoy my naturally dyed yarn and roving knowing that it is locally grown, safe for you and for the environment, and very unique.
